Spring ritual for calmer skin

With our daughter, Leana, now joining Oh Lou Lou, I finally have the time to share our experience — what truly works for the skin.

In spring, everything seems to bloom — except the skin.

This is often the moment when what used to work no longer feels the same.

The skin may become more sensitive, a little unstable, or simply harder to read.

In reality, the skin is adjusting — and it needs a different kind of care to do so.

Changing temperatures, higher humidity, stronger light, and rising pollen levels all place a different kind of pressure on the skin.

This is when we often see: itchiness, flare-ups, redness, eczema becoming more active, rosacea and couperose reacting more easily.

In Ayurveda, this time of year is seen as a season of release. What was stored during winter — heaviness, density, stillness — begins to move. Often, it shows through the skin.

One of the most common reactions in spring is to do more — to cleanse more, to correct.

This is often where the imbalance begins.

When the skin becomes more reactive, it does not necessarily need more products.

It needs to be supported, without being disturbed. This is why lighter rhythms help.

A gentle oil cleanser that cleans without stripping — always with a warm towel.

A light oil or serum, just enough to support without weight.

A floral water — rose, lavender, or neroli — to calm and rebalance.

It is this simplicity that allows the skin to find its rhythm again.

Similarly, hydration and nourishment from the inside matter.

Warmer, simpler meals. Less heavy, rich foods.

A small amount of bitter herbs each day — lettuce, rocket, or dandelion.

Vegetables such as broccoli, celery, or eggplant.

Spices — ginger, fenugreek, a little turmeric.

These small shifts help the body release toxins — and the skin becomes more balanced.

Ritual for calming skin

A quick DIY 2-step ritual to calm irritated, red, and flared-up skin.

Soak a soft cloth in cool (not cold) water, ideally with chamomile or lavender hydrosol.

Place it on the skin, let it warm, refresh, and repeat once or twice.

Then press 2–3 drops of a blend:

1 tbsp MCT oil

+ 1 tsp calendula oil

+ 1 tsp hemp seed oil

Optional:

1 drop lavender or helichrysum

We chose lightweight MCT oil (fractionated coconut oil) for its silky, weightless feel, and ability to soothe sensitive skin and deliver other calming plant ingredients.

Press the oil into damp skin. The skin settles not when we do more — but when we do just enough, with the right rhythm.

From time to time, I will share skin routine tips like this that make a difference.

If you want to ask something about your skin, you can simply send me an email.

I read every message.

Natural Skin Care – Coconut Oil as Replacement for Beauty and Skin Care Products
Using some high quality virgin coconut oil as base/carrier and adding some essential oils and couple of other ingredients you can literary replace majority of skin care products. Plus it will save you lots of money! Contrary to many claims that you can see lately on social networks, VIRGIN coconut oil is non-comedogenic (it does not clog pores)! In fact, when used in its purest form it works wonders for any type of skin including acneic! This is because Coconut oil is anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal. For example, Candida, Staphylococcus aureus, and other pathogens, fungi, bacteria and viruses are destroyed by coconut oil.
Sun Kissed Naturally - Natural Oils as Sunscreen

Looking for a healthy altrenative to commercial sunscreens that may contain cancerogenic ingredients?

It is not widely known that natural oils do offer great SPF protection!

For example red raspberry seed oil is SPF 28-50, carrot seed oil SPF 38-40, wheat germ oil SPF 20, karanja (pongamia) oil SPF 20, hazelnut oil SPF 15 non-GMO soybean oil SPF 10.

Other oils, such as coconut oil, jojoba oil olive oil, macadamia oil, sesame oil, avocado oil, hempseed oil, and shea butter offer low SPF protection (SPF2-8).

WHY ORGANIC HANDMADE BEAUTY PRODUCTS?

TOP 5 DISTURBING REASONS TO DITCH COMMERCIAL COSMETICS

Many people are looking for alternatives to commercial cosmetics.  Whilst the reasons may not be that obvious, they are quite disturbing, once you get to the bottom of what’s behind the curtains.

Here are some of the top reasons:

  • Traditional cosmetic products contain dangerous toxins like heavy metals, phthalates and hundreds of others linked to cancer, hormonal disorders, fertility issues etc. The United Nations Environmental Program estimates that approximately 70,000 chemicals are in common use across the world, with 1,000 new chemicals being introduced every year.

  • Women absorb an estimated 2.5 kg of chemicals a year just from the makeup they use. Most items we rub on the skin end up in our bloodstream, and are distributed throughout our body.

  • The skin is actually our largest organ, and it is highly absorbent. A large portion of the toxins we are exposed to on a daily basis comes through our skin, not just through the food.

  • Using chemicals on our skin is actually worse than eating them. When we eat something, the enzymes in our saliva and stomach help to break it down and flush it out of our body. However, when we apply these chemicals on our skin, they are absorbed straight into our bloodstream and going directly to our delicate organs. They tend to accumulate over time because we typically lack the necessary enzymes to break them down.

Even when the product is certified as organic (biological, bio) it may still contain some controversial ingredients and preservatives.

For example, Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS) is an approved ingredient by many eco and organic certification bodies even though nearly 16,000 studies mention the toxicity of sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS). SLS is a surfactant used as foaming agent, detergent and emulsifier in thousands of cosmetic products and industrial cleaners.

So what to do, what is an alternative?

Luckily, most of the beauty and skin care products can be made at home at affordable price and far superior quality. The recipes can be found all around the web; we also post them regularly at http://foodinloveout.com along with many other natural beauty tips.

For those who don’t have the time or desire to go into the adventure of making the products, you can order them from our shop at  http://www.ohloulou.com

Or look at the other shops making small batches of truly handmade and toxin-free products.

Beware of those who advertise themselfs as "HANDMADE" and "NATURAL" and at the same operate hundreds of shops worldwide...

Beware of “Organic”. Many labels randomly state “organic” or “with organic jojoba etc…” this means NOTHING, unless they have a valid certificate. The certificate means that strict controls are put in place and you can at least be 100% sure that what’s displayed on the label is true.

Oh Lou Lou! beauty products are: handmade. It means they are made by hand! with organic, mostly edible ingredients like raw butters, unrefined cold pressed vegetable oils and pure essential oils.

Oh Lou Lou! products are PURE - they contain 100% active ingredients (no water, no fillers).  No preservatives, stabilisers, no surfactants, no harmful substances: no SLS, no ALS, no Sodium Coco Sulfate, no Benzyl Alcohol no Cocamidopropyl Betaine, no Propylene Glycol…

This, in essence, means: ZERO toxins, ZERO dangerous ingredients.

Oh Lou Lou! products are certified organic – they all carry Ecogarantie label. This means that everything that is stated on the label is true, every single ingredient is validated and approved and a strict production control process is in place and controlled regularly.

Our products are delicate and since no preservatives are added, they need to be carefully handled (kept at dark and dry place, the temperature usually needs to be below 25C).

Once you understand the need and importance for natural toxin-free products, staying true to them will be easy and rewarding.
