Benzene - Why should you care? 

A lot of dry shampoos will have a propellant - an additive that makes it propel into the air and become aerosolized.

Frequently inhaling benzene at levels of 0.4 parts per billion over time could cause cancer per 100,000 people, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. 

Benzene is one of the most widely produced chemicals in the world. A highly volatile liquid, benzene is used in making gasoline and as a solvent in many chemical and pharmaceutical products. Benzene may be found in glues, adhesives, cleaning products, paints, tobacco smoke, gasoline…

Valisure detected benzene in hand sanitizers, sunscreens, deodorant, dry shampoos, conditioners, antiperspirants, deodorants, body sprays and anti-fungal treatments.

The contamination has been most frequently detected in aerosol (spray) products.

Exposure to benzene increases the risk of developing leukemia and other blood disorders.

IARC (International Agency for Research on Cancer) classifies benzene as “carcinogenic to humans,” based on sufficient evidence that it causes acute myeloid leukemia (AML). IARC also notes that benzene exposure has been linked with acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL), chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), multiple myeloma, and non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

Even in EU, Benzene that is classified as a Carcinogen Category 1A is allowed to be present in cosmetic product up to 0.1%.

Unilever recently announced a recall of multiple aerosol dry shampoo products due to contamination with a carcinogen called benzene.

Application

Spread it with hands or with your make-up brush. Allow the powder to set for couple of minutes, then brush thoroughly.
